W B Yeats

William Butler Yeats  (1865 - 1939)

Born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 13, 1865, William Butler Yeats was the son of a well-known Irish painter, John Butler Yeats. He spent his childhood in County Sligo, where his parents were raised, and in London. He returned to Dublin at the age of fifteen to continue his education and study painting, but quickly discovered he preferred poetry. Born into the Anglo-Irish landowning class, Yeats became involved with the Celtic Revival, a movement against the cultural influences of English rule in Ireland during the Victorian period, which sought to promote the spirit of Ireland’s native heritage. Though Yeats never learned Gaelic himself, his writing at the turn of the century drew extensively from sources in Irish mythology and folklore. Also a potent influence on his poetry was the Irish revolutionary Maud Gonne, whom he met in 1889, a woman equally famous for her passionate nationalist politics and her beauty. Though she married another man in 1903 and grew apart from Yeats (and Yeats himself was eventually married to another woman, Georgie Hyde Lees), she remained a powerful figure in his poetry.

Yeats was deeply involved in politics in Ireland, and in the twenties, despite Irish independence from England, his verse reflected a pessimism about the political situation in his country and the rest of Europe, paralleling the increasing conservativism of his American counterparts in London, T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. His work after 1910 was strongly influenced by Pound, becoming more modern in its concision and imagery, but Yeats never abandoned his strict adherence to traditional verse forms. He had a life-long interest in mysticism and the occult, which was off-putting to some readers, but he remained uninhibited in advancing his idiosyncratic philosophy, and his poetry continued to grow stronger as he grew older. Appointed a senator of the Irish Free State in 1922, he is remembered as an important cultural leader, as a major playwright (he was one of the founders of the famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin), and as one of the very greatest poets—in any language—of the century. W. B. Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1923 and died in 1939 at the age of seventy-three.

Roy Foster

R. F. Foster is the Carroll Builders Professor of Irish History at Hertford College, Oxford.
He is the author of biographies of Charles Stewart Parnell and Lord Randolph Churchill, the editor of The Oxford History of Ireland (1989) and author of Modern Ireland: 1600-1972 (1988) as well as several books of essays. More recently, Foster has produced a much acclaimed two part biography of William Butler Yeats which was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and also collaborated with Fintan Cullen on a National Portrait Gallery exhibition, 'Conquering England: the Irish in Victorian London'.

Sinead Cusack

Sinead Cusack, Ireland-born star of stage, film and television, first moved to London to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her stage roles have earned her two Tony Award nominations as well as Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Theatre awards. On screen she has starred in Stealing Beauty, A Room with a View, V for Vendetta, the recent BBC miniseries 37 Days, and many other productions. Other actors in her family include father Cyril Cusack, husband Jeremy Irons, and son Max Irons.

Piers Plowright

Piers Plowright was born in London in 1937 and made a Fellow of The Royal Society of Literature in 1998 without writing a single book (although he did write a thriller called ‘The Smuggler’ in 1975, intended for learners of English, which has been translated into Basque and still sells. A collectors’ item). However, he had spent the previous 30 years making radio plays, documentaries and features for the BBC, including literary portraits of Olivia Manning, Yukio Mishima, Jorge Luis Borges, Grazia Deledda, Alberto Moravia, Arthur Waley, and Naguib Mahfouz, as well as working with young British writers.

While at the BBC, Piers won three Prix Italias for his documentaries, and numerous Sony Radio Awards. In 2005 he was made an Hon DLitt at Bournemouth University, and an Audio Luminary at the Chicago Third Coast Radio Festival in 2007.  He currently runs the literary side of the Hampstead Arts Festival and organises conversations with distinguished figures in the Arts and Sciences at Burgh House Hampstead. He’s also trying to improve his drawing, painting and jazz-piano playing (he notes: 'don’t hold your breath').
