The Elie Ensemble is a sextet of superb young musicians formed at the 2016 East Neuk Festival in Fife, Scotland, under the guidance of, and including, Belcea Quartet violist Krzysztof Chorzelski.

CAVATINA Family Concert: Antara Duo

Saturday 11 November 2017 at 3.00pm at St John's Downshire Hill

An introduction to the wonderful world of chamber music designed for children aged 5 and above as well as the young at heart of any age. Using two of the most ancient instruments - flute and harp - Thomas and Rachel will demonstrate how to make beautiful sounds and will play music by CPE Bach, Piazzolla and other composers. This concert will last about one hour and is FREE for children.

Belcea Quartet

One of today’s most sought-after string quartets, the Belcea’s regular stomping grounds are the world’s great concert halls. In this rare appearance at an intimate London festival, the quartet will premiere an exploratory programme featuring Beethoven’s masterpieces, the Op 130 quartet and the Grosse Fuge, and related ‘mysterious musical company’. Audience / artist Q&A to follow.

Misha Mullov-Abbado Group

Misha was recently named a BBC New Generation Artist for 2017-19.

Composer, double bassist and horn player Misha Mullov-Abbado’s debut album was named among the “Best Jazz Albums of 2015” by The Telegraph and BBC Radio 3. Still in his mid twenties, he has already won several awards, including the Dankworth Prize for jazz composition and the Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize. The MMA Group will be performing works from their brand new second album.
With James Davison (trumpet), Matthew Herd (alto sax), Sam Rapley (tenor sax), Liam Dunachie (piano), Misha Mullov-Abbado (double bass) and Scott Chapman (drums). Incidentally, Misha is the son of 2017 HAF artist Viktoria Mullova and conductor Claudio Abbado.

This concert is also part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.

Viktoria Mullova: Stradivarius in Rio

Since winning the Gold Medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition and, one year later, dramatically defecting from the USSR, Viktoria Mullova has become one of the greatest and most musically curious violinists active today. She has explored, among other genres, baroque violin and jazz, and she has toured with Julian Joseph. In this concert, a band of virtuosos will play works by icons of Brazilian popular music, including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte.
With Matthew Barley (cello), Paul Clarvis (percussion) and João Luis Nogueira Pinto (guitar).

Escher Quartet

One of America’s most exciting young ensembles, the Eschers are artist members of the prestigious Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Their Hampstead programme features music by Grieg, Mendelssohn and the original version of the hauntingly beautiful “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber.
