Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius

Saturday 2 November 2019 at 7.30pm at Hampstead Parish Church

This performance of Elgar's masterpiece is made possible by a grant from the Hampstead Church Music Trust and is presented in association with the Friends of the Music.. Aidan Coburn makes his role debut as Gerontius, and contralto Jessica Dandy appears as the Angel, together with the choirs of Emmanuel and Fitzwilliam Colleges, Cambridge, Colla Voce Singers, and Orpheus Sinfonia. Peter Foggitt conducts.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (film)

Wednesday 6 November 2019 at 7.30pm at Hampstead Parish Church

The Passion of Joan of Arc, a 1928 silent film widely considered one of cinema's greatest achievements, is screened with a live choral soundtrack from The Choir of Hampstead Parish Church. Selected choral works of the Renaissance and later periods are linked by passages newly composed by Peter Foggitt (who also conducts the performance). There will be one interval.

Sir Chris Bonington

We’re proud to welcome back Sir Chris Bonington to his native Hampstead for a conversation with journalist and presenter Rosie Goldsmith. Sir Chris’s name is synonymous with legendary climbing achievements, such as the first British ascent of the North Wall of the Eiger and the first ascents of the South Face of Annapurna and of the South West Face of Everest. He has written 17 books (most recently, Ascent), presents television programmes and lectures widely.

Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine Maria

Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine Maria is performed by the renowned Choir of Hampstead Parish Church, together with an ensemble of period instrumentalists. This is a rare opportunity outside of major concert halls to hear such a work performed by a one-to-a-part professional group; the acoustics of St John-at-Hampstead are ideal for this music. Peter Foggitt conducts.

Russian Soul: the Story of Rachmaninov in Song tells a dramatic story - in song and in spoken words - that starts in Imperial Russia, ends in Beverley Hills, sweeps through old and new worlds, penniless exile, comfortless fame, and asks searching questions along the way. Who was Rachmaninov, beyond the 6ft scowl he presented to Stravinsky? Why does he matter? What did he leave the future? And can a western world that hasn’t even reached agreement on how to spell his name ever come to terms with what his music is about?

Lionel Shriver's works of fiction include Property (2018), The Mandibles (2016), A Perfectly Good Family (2015), Big Brother (2013), The New Republic (2012), National Book Award finalist So Much for That (2010), New York Times bestseller The Post-Birthday World (2007) and Orange Prize-winning We Need to Talk About Kevin (2003). She is widely published also as a journalist and appears regularly on television and radio. Lionel lives in London and Brooklyn, NY. She will be interviewed by journalist and presenter Rosie Goldsmith.

Deborah Levy

in conversation with Rosie Goldsmith

Deborah Levy is a distinguished novelist, short-story writer, playwright, poet, essayist and contributor to national newspapers and other publications. Two of her novels, Swimming Home and Hot Milk, were shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The Man Who Saw Everything is on the Booker Prize 2019 list. Her short-story collection Black Vodka was a finalist for the International Frank O’Connor Award. She is the author of several plays, including for the RSC, as well as of screenplays and radio adaptations for the BBC. Deborah will be in conversation with journalist and presenter Rosie Goldsmith.

Marcin Masecki    jazz piano

Marcin Masecki is one of Poland’s most prolific and idiosyncratic musicians. Among his other activities, he was music arranger, composer and consultant for Paweł Pawlikowski‘s film Cold War (Best Director at Cannes Film Festival 2018). In this Hampstead Arts Festival / EFG Lndon Jazz Festvial solo recital, Marcin will improvise on a mix of Polish, American, German and Argentinian tunes from the 20’s and 30’s.

This concert is also part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.

Steven Isserlis masterclass

Thursday 21 November 2019 at 6.00pm at Rosslyn Hill Chapel

One of the great musicians of our time makes his HAF debut teaching a masterclass to talented young soloists and/or ensembles.

The class will last three hours, including an interval.
